Thermochromic, colour changing inks, paints, sheet and pigments...

Thermochromic pigments and coatings are temperature sensitive and change colour at certain activations temperatures.

We have a standard range of colour changing coatings that we supply our customers, such as…15°C for cold activations (chill and reveal), 27°C for touch applications (touch and reveal), 31°C for rub applications (rub and reveal) and 47°C for hot applications (heat and reveal). We can also supply our customers with custom made thermochromic coatings*. This means that the activation temperature can be altered depending on the application the coating is being used for. Most temperature sensitive coatings are reversible; this means that the colour change can take place again and again. It is also possible to get irreversible pigments and coatings that only change colour once. Irreversible Thermochromic inks are used to monitor extreme temperatures…once the surface or object reaches a certain temperature the thermochromics will change colour permanently.

There are thousands of uses for thermochromic coatings, some serious and some novel. Thermochromic ink is a smart material which is currently part of the national curriculum. This makes thermochromic coatings perfect as an educational tool. Thermochromic coatings have been used for hot warning labels, hot drink indicators, cold drink labels, colour changing t-shirts, colour changing mugs and glasses, beads, jewellery and a whole lot more. We supply companies all over the world with our colour changing products. Thermochromic products can also be called other names such as, thermochromatic and thermochromism which is actually a state. Thermochromic paints have been used for the notorious colour changing cars, whilst thermochromic ink is mainly used for screen printing onto textiles, plastic, paper and board. Thermochromics can be applied to most substrates by using a separate medium.

Thermochromic LC (liquid crystal) sheets are available in different bandwidths and sizes. Liquid crystal, thermacolour or thermocolour sheets are a great captivation tool but also have a more serious use such as heat mapping tools in engineering.
