When you think of Liquid Crystal, what do you imagine? It is so commonplace; you can find it at your fingertips. Not only in the cells of your body, but your phone screen too!

What is the science behind it?
It is a substance that is neither liquid nor solid- it belongs to a category of chemicals that exist in a wonderous in-between state. The molecules can have the organised arrangement of crystalline solid but flowing quality of a liquid. Their shape is that of a rod and are arranged parallel to each other or in layers. These molecules have several phases. Nemetic is where the atoms are aligned in the same direction and can move past each other. Another phase Smectic. In this state, atoms are organised but arranged in layers. They can rotate by themselves but cannot move past each other.

How is this amazing effect achieved?
Most effective and striking when used on a black base, liquid crystalline changes colour when heat is applied: 24°C and 29°C, through electrical currents or magnetic interference. In their natural state, Liquid Crystal atoms are twisted, but when electricity is passed through the molecules straighten. When light crosses its path, a liquid crystal material will display a rainbow or specific range of colours, depending how a product has been designed. When thermal contact is made and it has surpassed its upmost temperature limit, the material will return to its default black state.

What are the possibilities?
Nowadays, almost every electronic display exhibits some form of Liquid Crystal Display (LCD). Used in your TV, computer and your digital watch, liquid crystal is truly a captivating, diverse material. For example, many thermometers now use this substance. Other applications include mood rings, batteries, security products and thermal mapping. Even privacy glass that changes from translucent or frosted to clear, incorporates liquid crystal technology.
