Ferrofluid is a liquid that is attracted to a magnetic field and creates phenomenal shapes in its presence. Perfect for thrilling educational demonstrations and displays!

Ferrofluids are superparamagnets, which is a term applied to nanoparticles that exhibit a state change when an external force is applied.

Ferrofluid is a colloidal liquid made up of nano ferromagnetic particles suspended in a carrier solvent (usually an orangic solvent or water). Each tiny particle is coated with a surfactant to inhibit clumping (agglomeration). When exposed to a strong magnetic field, large ferromagnetic particles are pulled out of the mixture to form separate clumps of magnetic dust.

The history of Ferrofluid
In 1963, Steve Papell at NASA invented a grinding process to allow liquid rocket fuel to be drawn up via a pump in a weightless environment. This meant it solved issues that come with sending a rocket into an environment with zero gravity. Papell achieved this by applying a magnetic field. Ferrofluid was born, inspiring R.E. Rosensweig to discover and synthesise more highly magnetic liquids and additional carrier liquids. These discoveries evolved into a new branch of fluid mechanics called ferrohydrodynamics.
